Opposite the coastal town and old harbour of Vilanculos, lies a chain of five islands. Once forming part of the mainland, this “spit” broke away from the mainland 25,000 years ago to form the Archipelago, comprising Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruque, Banque and Santa Carolina. Benguerra Island is approximately 55 square kilometers in extent, ensuring ample privacy within an idyllic paradise. The island sustains a diverse population of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland eco-systems. It was declared a National Park in 1971. Nestled within a bay on the protected northwest side of the island, Benguerra Lodge merges into indigenous milkwood and acacia forests and is flanked by thatched chalets built on stilts. Each chalet offers its own wonderful sea view and beach access. Each bungalow consists of a double room with en suite bathroom and private balcony from which to enjoy the magnificent sunsets and abundant bird life. Experience the thrill of crystal clear water and spectacular unspoiled reefs by snorkeling either in the waters at the lodge or around one of the reefs further out. For the more adventurous, the excitement of night or wreck dives is also an option! Wind surfers and an 11-foot catamaran are also available. The Mozambique Channel is famous for record size marlin and sailfish and we can promise tremendous fishing to both serious fisherman and beginner anglers. All equipment required is available. Even if you are a first time fisherman, you’ll be helped and encouraged every step of the way. Due to the varied landscapes on the island, Benguerra is home to over 115 varieties of birds, including the rare crab plover, olive bee-eater, green coucal and the narina trogon. One trip around the island by land rover with a picnic and all non-motorised water sports are included in the rate. Drinks and motorized water sport activities will be charged as extras. Benguerra Lodge prides itself on its cuisine and freshly caught line fish, crayfish, calamari and crab are tantalizingly prepared and presented. Spend your time enjoying the sun, sand, sea and surf that this paradise has to offer over the next few days.
