Explore the Luangwa Valley, through which the meandering Luangwa River runs, and which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. The ox bow lagoons, woodland and plains host huge concentrations of game, including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 400 species of birds. To explore this wilderness, Robin Pope has established safari camps situated throughout the Luangwa Valley. Your safari has come to be known as “the” wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. The river rapidly changes course here and the resulting channels and lagoons host spectacular game. Your first two nights accommodation is at Nkwali Camp, offering superb game viewing in a beautiful area of ebony woodland and open grass plains. Nkwali is famous for leopard and giraffe sightings. Activities include walking, game drives and night drives. You then spend two nights in the bush wlaking from one campsite to the next. The grass hut camps are comfortable, rustic and are all en suite. You conclude your walking safari at Tena Tena, a remote camp within the National Park enjoying a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. Activities at camp include bush walks, led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout; game viewing drives in open, four-wheel drive vehicles; and night drives where you discover the nocturnal world of the bush, from owls and genets to hunting lions and the graceful leopard. Evenings are spent relaxing at camp, enjoying wonderful conversation and good food, under the magnificent expanse of the African sky.
