Day by Day Itinerary Back to Trips for Malawi

Lake Malawi and Liwonde

Liwonde National Park is situated in the south of Malawi and is the country’s premier wildlife reserve. As a result of the wide variety of habitats, there is a great diversity of plant, animal and bird life present. The bird life is outstanding – possibly the best birding location in central and southern Africa. Activities at the lodge include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles (morning, afternoon and evening), nature walks and superb river trips up the Shire. Another unique adventure is a bicycle trip from the boundary of Liwonde to the local villages, giving one a superb cultural experience. You then transfer by charter flight to Kaya Mawa Lodge situated on the southwestern tip of Likoma Island. Likoma remains almost untouched since its discovery by Scottish missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century. There are endless pristine white sandy beaches, great snorkeling, and superb bird watching, especially in some of the indigenous inland forests. Activities available include: scuba (including Padi diving courses), snorkelling, swimming, sailing, waterskiing, tube riding, wake snaking, and fishing. In addition, there are many opportunities to enjoy uncontrived cultural experiences in some of the surrounding villages, escorted by local guides who live in the area.
