Day by Day Itinerary Back to Trips for Botswana

Road Less Traveled

This safari will appeal to the traveler seeking a unique and more rustic wildlife experience without the frills of luxury lodges and gourmet cuisine. The focus is on a first class safari experience with in a more low key and genuine environment. The trip begins at the rustic Mashatu Tented Camp where you explore the wide spaces of north-eastern Botswana accompanied by an armed ranger and tracker. Situated in the north eastern Tuli enclave of Botswana, Mashatu Game Reserve lies in an area of history and legend, offering some of the most exciting game viewing in Africa. It is a place of exceptional beauty where one can explore the rugged, unspoiled African landscapes either in the comfort of open 4-wheel drive vehicles or on mountain bicycles, guided by expert rangers and experienced trackers. You travel overland from Botswana to South Africa and onto the Makuleke Concession, perhaps the best area for walking in the entire Kruger National Park. It is blessed not only with exceptional biodiversity but also spectacular scenery, seasonally high densities of many large mammal species, a feeling of wilderness and remoteness, and a sense of history. You spend three days at Pafuri Camp, situated on the northern bank of the Luvuvhu River within lush riverine forest. On morning and afternoon activities, you may choose from a range of options, including game and nature drives in open 4x4 vehicles; night drives throughout the concession (north of the Luvuvhu), birding walks and foot safaris all accompanied by an armed guide. From Pafuri you travel by light aircraft to Mala Mala. Situated on the largest tract of land within the Sabi Sand Reserve and sharing a common boundary with the world famous Kruger National Park, MalaMala offers incredible sightings of Africa's wildlife - including the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo). This is truly a distinctive experience for the traveler seeking a genuine off the beaten track safari in the spirit of real Africa.
