The Selous Game Reserve stretches across southeast Tanzania. The largest game reserve in Africa, it covers an area of 50,000 square kilometers of true wilderness. The ecosystems of the reserve are so diverse that the Selous was designated a World Heritage Site in 1982. Selous Safari Camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and lake complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. The lodge was built with flair and imagination, entirely from local materials, with spectacular views over the magnificent Rufiji River. Each of the nine safari tents is on its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush. The spacious tents are luxuriously appointed, with en suite bathrooms with double brass basins and open air hot-water showers. The tent has two verandas- one to the front off the bedroom, second off the rear of tent. The camp has its own swimming pool, enabling guests to cool off in the heat of the day. One mess area is elevated onto tall platforms and the other is set amongst a grove of trees, both with large comfortable sofas, and wildlife reference library. Their chefs prepare the finest cuisine from a kitchen well-supplied with local organic products. Meals are complemented by a good selection of wines and there is a well-stocked bar. While guests find that game viewing and communing with nature can readily be achieved without moving from the camp itself, the camp offers full opportunities to get out into the bush to explore more of the Selous Game Reserve, its intriguing topography, its fascinating flora and its teeming wildlife. Open four-wheeled drive vehicles, specially adapted for close-up game viewing, make for exhilarating early morning and evening forays into the surrounding bush. On the Rufiji River and its many tributaries, channels and lagoons, the camp offers game viewing by boat, an opportunity for guests to obtain close-up photographs and views of the many hippo wallowing in the water and the large crocodiles lurking on the banks. The wealth of the Selous reserve's vivid bird life is best seen from the boat.
